This position is located in Moab, Utah, which will support and perform a variety of environmental and technical activities including air monitoring, environmental compliance, and occasionally land restoration and revegetation activities, ground water monitoring, and quality assurance of the Moab UMTRA Project. Under direct supervision learns to apply standard discipline principles to perform duties in a variety of fixed facility and field environments. Performs variety of environmental engineering and waste management activities supporting client needs.


Job Description

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Analyze site requirements for environmental air monitoring and prepare out year plans for the next one-, three- and five- year operations and support closure planning activities.
  • Manage and maintain the Project’s Environmental Air Monitoring Program which includes the operation and maintenance of up to 36 monitoring stations, by collecting, analyzing, and validating samples quarterly for radon and direct gamma radiation, and collecting weekly filters for radio particulates. The position is also responsible for the preparation of quarterly air monitoring reports. Sampling, analysis, data validation, and reporting shall be performed according to the Project Environmental Air Monitoring Sampling and Analysis Plan.
  • Maintain meteorological stations at the Moab and Crescent Junction sites and record data within an internet-based system
  • Must have proven meticulous attention to detail, strong communication skills, good organizational skills and ability to self-direct and prioritize.
  • Must have ability to work independently, as well as within teams, using judgment and discretion in making decisions which may directly impact facility compliance.
  • Must have ability to read, understand, and implement work plans.
  • The position requires the flexibility to be “on-call” after duty hours as required. May be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Maintain written and electronic records of daily performance and sample data.
  • Safely and successfully operate sampling equipment and machinery.
  • This position will require lifting and moving of heavy objects (up to 50 pounds).

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Must be able to operate common brush removal and reduction equipment and able to accept and perform primary responsibility for well field operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of local plant species and ecology.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and procedures.
  • Running an irrigation system, irrigation repairs, soil sampling, compost pit operations, conducting reveg/soil test plots, mowing, weed management, project budgeting, general oversight of subcontractors etc.
  • Assist in composing technical documents.
  • Onsite activities such as surface soil, groundwater, surface water, and stream sediment characterization.
  • Routine site-wide monitoring activities including but not limited to surface water, groundwater, sediment, soil, direct exposure, and biota monitoring.
  • Investigation-derived waste (IDW) management and disposition.
  • Perform other duties as assigned at the discretion of management.


Job Requirements

  •    Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Science or related technical degree. Years of commensurate experience may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree.
  •    5 years demonstrable experience with environmental laws, rules and regulations to include both Federal and Utah, is preferred.
  •    Must have current 40-hour and 8-hour hazardous waste operations level training or the ability to acquire training.
  • Specialty Qualifications: Training and professional skill development will be provided for the various aspects of the position, as appropriate based on the individual’s experience.  Proficiencies and training the individual has already received should be considered.
  •    Knowledgeable of environmental sampling techniques, sample preservation, and shipment.
  •    General knowledge of hazardous materials storage requirements.
  •    Knowledgeable and experienced using common powered tools for brush removal and reduction, including chippers, saws, tractors, trucks, etc.
  • Some fundamentals associated with this position include the ability to read and interpret documents in English, including reports and property drawings/markings, to write reports and correspondences in English, and to verbally communicate effectively with customers and associated contractors.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.
  • Current driver’s license.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or approved to work within the United States
  • The ability to obtain security clearance enabling access to various government facilities.

This position may require the ability to obtain a government clearance. This position may require reviews and test for absence of any illegal drugs along with a background investigation by the Federal government in order to obtain an access authorization prior to employment, and may require subsequent reinvestigations may be required.
