Job Description

Provide expert criticality safety engineering support to the Department of Energy Savannah River Site Nuclear Materials Engineering Division (NMED) located in Aiken, South Carolina. Support will consist primarily of review and assessment of contractor-generated nuclear criticality safety evaluations and calculations for non-reactor nuclear facilities. Review and assessment of related Criticality Safety Program documentation may be included on an as needed basis.

Perform detailed review of NCSEs and supporting documents for H-Canyon, H B Line, SRNL, DWPF, SWMF, CSTF, K and L Areas, including field observations when necessary, to assure that criticality safety is being accomplished in the thorough, accurate and compliant manner required to support facility Safety Basis documentation prior to submittal to NM Engineering Director. Reviews are to be documented in the Site Tracking, Analysis and Reporting (STAR) system. Comments identified during the review are to be documented in the Comment Resolution Database (CRD) and incorporation of comments, where applicable, is to be verified.

Job Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nuclear Engineering.
  • Must have at least a DOE “L” clearance. DOE “Q” clearance preferable.
  • 5 years of criticality safety engineering experience within the prior 10 years, including satisfactory completion of ANSI/ANS 8.26 equivalent Criticality Safety Engineer Qualification, development of nuclear criticality safety evaluations and demonstrated knowledge of nuclear facility operations.
  • Ability to produce high quality reports, and reviews of calculations.

Federal Government Clearance:

This position may require the ability to obtain a government clearance. This position may require reviews and test for absence of any illegal drugs along with a background investigation by the Federal government in order to obtain an access authorization prior to employment, and may require subsequent reinvestigations may be required.
